House Information
Living in the Fiji house is a residence experience unlike any other. There are at least three huge advantages to living in our house.
1. FIJI House is one of the most economical places for a brother to live. Rent is as low as $290.00 per month!
2. The social atmosphere generated by the house and those who live there is unparralleled.
3. Life in our house is conductive to scholarship, something we as Phi Gamma Delta hold in our HIGHEST regard.
Living in a university residence is very costly, especially if the tenant wishes to have their own stove, or fridge, etc. Residences often have group washrooms, and provide limited appliances for the number of people assigned to them. If a person wishes to have their own they are required to pay significantly more, and this often compromises the social situations group residences provides by forcing the tenant into their own bachelor suite or 1 bedroom apartment. Our house has enough fridge, stove and cupboard space to give all members in the house access to these amenities at any time. We also have 2 barbecues and a deep freezer, further adding to the versatility of cooking and storage options. We have a washer and dryer, which is available at no charge to the people in the house. The three bathrooms in the house ensure that each bathroom has only a few people assigned to it, which keeps the line-ups short in the morning. The house rent is always much more competitive than the surrounding university rates, and rent includes cable, both wired and wireless internet, all cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and utilities. This makes life much more economical for those living here.
Residences tend to group people together based on space and availability. This can lead to fighting among tenants, because shared appliances and washrooms can lead to disputes. Chores and cleanliness standards are among the other main causes for tenant arguments. The FIJI house and its tenants all get along. All issues that arise are solved immediately, because we as brothers ensure to keep the atmosphere in the house at its best. Our chore lists, which we monitor closely, keeps our house among the cleanest on campus, as well as throughout the International Fraternity. With our use of an older member as House Manager, we ensure that the house offers more respect and responsibility than is offered in some residences.
The social environment in our house is second to none, as we enjoy each other’s company. This is evident on any given night in the house, as something is always happening. From study nights, to hockey games, to movies, to just basking in the glow of the television the list goes on. Life in the house is great for helping people develop social and interactive skills, because something is always happening.
Being on campus makes our house a central gathering point for all Undergraduate Fijis. It also means that Libraries, counsellors, and university aid is only a short walk away. The house library, located on the third floor serves as a place for people to go to study as it is separated and quiet in relation to most of the house. As a result members in the house have access to help and study space whenever they need it. Whether it’s just getting help from another brother who’s taken the same class, or going to do research, the house location is crucial in making life here the way it is.
In conclusion, cost effective, affordable housing combined with a great atmosphere and scholarship oriented environment makes this house the place to be on our campus.
