With exams coming up, we here at Phi Gamma Delta wish the best of luck to everyone on their final examinations!

Here is a motivational and inspiring quote by brother Calvin Coolidge:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination are omnipotent.
The slogan Press On has solved, and will always solve the problems of the human race.“

Once again, good luck to everyone on their exams, and have a wonderful Christmas break!

Press On,

Hey all!

Hopefully you all had an excellent October, and are now looking forward to November! Here at FIJI we ended October strong, and can’t wait for what November has in store for us.

On Oct 31, we participated in “Trick or Treatery” for the University of Alberta’s Campus Food Bank.
Here the us FIJI’s teamed up with the Ladies of Delta Gamma (Team DIGI) dressed up in their costumes, and walked along several routes asking houses for food donations. Not only was the event fun, but it was very successful.

team DIJI: the "spoils" of trick or treatery

Also currently we have the pleasure of entertaining our Field Secretary. We are doing our best to give him the full Canadian experience. So far he’s played in his first ice hockey game (which we won 5-3!), had a poutine, and had ketchup chips.

For never skating before, he looked "rusty"

What can we look forward to in November?

Mo-Vember! We have a few brothers participating in it, and a graduate brother currently doing his own “unique take” on mo-vember. The details for our undergraduate brother’s hasn’t been quite worked out yet, but feel free to support our graduate brother Ian Clarke by visiting his page here.

We also have quite a few pledge events to be excited for.
This weekend Nov. 5 we have the Alpha Gamma Delta: Greek Games which is quite entertaining.
Then Nov. 28 we have Greek God and Goddess, which based on FIJI’s performances in anchor-splash; many are looking forward to.

Hope you all have a great November, and good luck with any upcoming exams. We’ll keep you posted with whats going on in FIJI land!

Hey all!

So this weekend wasn’t as event filled as our last weekend, but it was just as fun.
What better way to end a week of school than with some pumpkin carving?!
Friday we had an exchange with the lovely ladies of Pi Beta Phi (Alberta-Alpha). During this exchange FIJI’s and Pi Phi’s put their creative minds to work, and carved out over 20 pumpkins. For some it was their first time ever carving a pumpkin and they wished they had done it sooner! For other more “seasoned veterans”, they used their carving “expertise” to carve out some intricate designs. We had quite the variety of pumpkins ranging from words, and traditional pumpkins, to stenciled out Hello Kitty ones, and even an owl!
Shortly after the carving festivities, another Halloween themed event took place: Horror movies! The FIJI’s and Pi Phi’s braved it out, and endured two movies, which were frightening and also entertaining. Finally we wrapped up the evening by making use of the innards of the carved pumpkins via Pumpkin Pie. A few FIJI’s and Pi Phi’s worked hard in the kitchen producing 6 delicious pumpkin pies, and several pumpkin seeds.
All in all, no one was disappointed in the festivities, and the FIJI and Pi Phi houses have several pumpkins to proudly display come Halloween on Monday!

Next up costumes:
Though Halloween is on the Monday, it did not deter many of us FIJI’s from dressing up for the weekend! We had people “occupying wall street”, “locked out NBA players”, Banana’s in Pyjama’s, Morph-suits, Indiana Jones, bearded men, and much more traditional, or witty costumes.

We hope that many of these costumes make a return on Monday, when it is actually Halloween so that Halloween Trick-or-Treatery will be fun for all!

Press on!

October 24, 1970 the Epsilon Alpha of Phi Gamma Delta was founded.

Happy 41 years gentlemen. Mighty Proud! To recap our weekend the following events happened (on a Saturday as well!):
1. Kappa Alpha Theta’s: Flap Jacks and Quarterbacks
2. Delta Gamma anchor splash
3. 41st Norris Pig Dinner

1. Started off our very busy day with some pancakes, sausage, and football. Unfortunately our flag-football team didn’t win any of their games, but they put in a valiant effort, and lost a very close game in overtime. Next year gentlemen!

2. It was Delta Gamma’s anchor splash week, which involved serenading their president, a “beautiful eyes” competition, a glasses drive, and a silent auction. But it was on Saturday where the the pool related activities took place. So after a regroup after FJs and QB’s we ventured off to the pool.
First up banner presentation: With the slogan “Without vision, there is no sight; but with HOPE we see a future” we showed our wonderful poster consisting of an owl and anchor to all those in attendance.
Next up relays: Let’s just say with the day being so busy, FIJI wasn’t able to compile the greatest swim team. Regardless, persistence made the team press on, and the team was not only able to not drown, but finished in the middle of the pack, even winning first in the “raft” competition!
Finally synchronized swimming: This was FIJI’s time to shine. Given our song for serenade the president, the bar was set high, and we accepted the challenge, and refused to disappoint. The competition was looking tough, and with FIJI’s being last to perform, many did not know what to expect. When it was our turn to perform, we successfully entertained the masses with a performance to NSYNC – Bye Bye Bye.

The return of FIGLEE was marked.
Here are links to our performances:
FIGLEE – synchronized swimming
FIGLEE – serenade the president

FIJI Poster:

Without vision, there is no sight; but with hope, we see a future

3. Pig Dinner: After returning from the pool, the brothers were quick to switch from trunks to their suit and ties. The saying “Not for college days alone” is always truly exemplified in this event. Through 41 glorious years, the Epsilon Alpha chapter of Phi Gamma Delta is as strong as ever, and will continue to grow and remain as one of the top fraternities on the University of Alberta campus!

So there it is, a recap of what has been happening in the wonderful land of FIJI.
Next up Alpha Gamma Delta’s: Greek Games, followed by Greek God and Goddess, in which many are already wondering what FIJI will do next.

Keep calm and press on!

We’ve got a busy weekend ahead, but we’ve also had a pretty busy week as well.
This week was the Delta Gamma – Beta Beta chapter’s anchor splash/thud week. We started off with “serenade” the president on Monday, which we performed a parody of “LFO- Girl on TV”, which we dubbed ” FIJI – Girl from DG”. Tuesday was the beautiful eye’s competition where all proceeds went to the CNIB, and the FIJI submission was able to raise a healthy amount! Wednesday was the eye glasses drive, where we collected old and used glasses to donate. Coming up Friday is the silent auction, which we hope everyone will enjoy our submission. Now the epic part: the weekend!
It is our chapters 41st annual Norris Pig Dinner at the Faculty Club this coming Saturday! Great time to catch up with old pledge brothers, meet some grads, meet some undergrads, and meet the new pledges. Words cannot begin to fully describe the importance and significance of this event. We hope to see all of you FIJI’s there! Now also for Saturday we’ve got two other inter-Greek events.
1. Flapjacks and Quarterbacks with the Kappa Alpha Theta’s. Here we have submitted a flag football team, to compete against other teams. This event raises money for ABC headstart. There’s also a pancake breakfast!

2. Anchor Splash wrap up. This is the day where all of the pool related activities take place. Great way to work off those pancakes if you didn’t play on the football team! Here we’ll take place in a raft race, and a series of relay races, and finally a synchronized swimming routine. With regard to the synchro swimming, we hope we can have just as an epic performance as serenade the president.

So that essentially sums up whats been going on in FIJI land this past week and whats to come.
Hopefully the photo accounts are made by the weekend so pictures of our adventures, good deeds, and pig dinner can be seen!
