REASON # 1 - Academics

The academic portion of your university career is one significant determinant in your future success. The primary purposes of the University of Alberta Fraternity System are to encourage and develop high scholastic achievement among its members.

REASON # 2 - Community Service

Usually, the one way a person gets involved in a philanthropic organization, is to do it with a group of friends. The fraternity is an excellent way for you to donate time for a good cause, plus having “volunteer experience” enhances your resume.

REASON # 3 - Leadership

In the fraternity, you will be “in charge” of an event or a meeting. Everyone in the fraternity is a leader, whether you’re on an executive, a committee, or a participant. You will learn by doing. You’ll learn how to manage a large budget, run effective meetings, speak in public, and motivate others - skills that will help you in university and throughout your life.

REASON # 4 - Athletics

Each fraternity participates in the Campus Rec Intramural Leagues and interfraternal competitions like the IFC Hockey Tournament and the Fraternity Foosball Tourney. It’s difficult to get a group of people on your own to play team intramural sports, outdoor paintball, or to get a softball game together on an afternoon. Fraternities off all of this along with the pride of sportsmanship, team spirit, and competition!

REASON # 5 - Brotherhood

Brotherhood is the foundation of the fraternity experience. Every man contributes to this aspect. Brotherhood combines the concept of individualism within the framework of mutual cooperation. It is also not about conformity. No fraternity is made up of members who are exactly alike. You’ll meet fraternity brothers who will grow to become your closest friends - those who will cheer you on when you’re successful, and who will support you when the going gets tough.

REASON # 6 - Networking

Let’s face it, networking and making business contacts is important in today’s economy and for your future. The best way to meet hundreds of people is to join a fraternity - not just the men in your own chapter, but from all over North America, plus a whole bunch of local alumni, and the people from other men’s and women’s fraternities.

REASON # 7 - Travelling

One great benefit in being in a fraternity is the chance to travel to other chapters across North America and visit your fraternity brothers and stay at the house for FREE. Even if you’re in a far away town for a day or so, you still have the opportunity to stop by and say hello to new friends you’ve never met before, yet have the fraternity and brotherhood in common with him.

Fraternities

People have a natural tendency to group together for camaraderie, protection, and development. In many ways, fraternities are the response to people wanting to belong to a group while attending a very large institution.

The first college fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Members, which were identified through things like a secret motto, password and handshake, often met to discuss political matters - something prohibited at the time.

Fraternities are typically single-gender organizations, with a Sorority being the female counterpart of a Fraternity. Fraternity members are sometimes called brothers, alluding to the supportive relationship that the organization can foster.

Most Fraternal organizations have names consisting of two or three Greek letters. These letters often represent the motto of the organization. Phi Gamma Delta, for instance, forms the first letters of “Friendship, the Sweetest Influence” in Greek.  Fraternities and Sororities are often called Greek Letter organizations, and their members called “Greeks”.

In modern times, Fraternities exist for a similar purpose: to provide a sense of community and a place for candid discussion at large post-secondary institutions. There are nearly 130 different Fraternal groups worldwide. Most fraternities are large organizations; Phi Gamma Delta, for instance, has chapters on over 120 different campuses in Canada and the United States. Our international headquarters is located in Lexington, Kentucky. They provide chapter development support, member insurance, leadership training, and guidance to chapters like Epsilon Alpha.

Fraternities often have houses, owned and managed by graduated brothers. They act as a home away from home for a number of members. At the U of A, members gather at their Fraternity Houses on Monday evenings for a meal and an opportunity to socialize.

Being a university student is a big transition from high school life. For many, it’s their first time making life decisions without the day-to-day guidance of parents or teachers. Fraternities are values-centered organizations that build good habits like philanthropy and community service. Fraternity men regularly unite their efforts towards a good cause, such as donating blood, raising money for charity, or performing manual labour for community groups.

Finally, modern day Fraternities provide an opportunity for students to develop socially. Since a fraternity is centered around common values, rather than common interests, it demands that the member to socialize with various types of people. Social events encourage members to build lifelong connections with people both inside and outside the Greek community. As well, the operation of fraternity matters leaves an opportunity for members to take on leadership positions, build their teamwork skills, and learn how to work towards a common goal. They strongly supplement and support the education received in classes at a university.

Strengths

The Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta has an amazing history of accomplishments, and the Epsilon Alpha chapter is a certain contributor to its successes. We’ll never pass by an opportunity to brag, so here’s what we’re proud of.

Community
Our chapter house is a place for members to rest, eat, study, meet new people, and even live in. However, as residents of the Garneau community, it’s important we give back to our neighbours. Fijis never hesitate to remove snow or rake leaves from the surrounding blocks. But we also see value in helping the greater community. Every month we host a community service event. Each Halloween we go trick or treating, but instead of asking for candy, we ask for a nonperishable food item. Last year Epsilon Alpha donated nearly 2000 kg of food to the food bank from this event alone. Our official local charity is the Meals on Wheels foundation, where members are always willing to help cook a meal. Fijis are even willing to man up once or twice a year, and donate blood at Canadian Blood Services.

Athletics
When not busy studying or working, brothers can participate in a wide variety of sports on campus. Athletics are an important part in Fiji life. Not only do they keep members physically active, but it also builds collective strength and teamwork skills. We have teams registered for sports like football, hockey, basketball and soccer, and also more obscure sports like ultimate Frisbee and futsal. If members are interested in individual sports offered by Campus Recreation, such as target shooting and golfing, then the fraternity will pay for half of the cost. Overall, Epsilon Alpha Fiji participates in more sports than any other fraternity, and is able to excel at each. It’s a rare event if we don’t make the playoffs for football, 3 on 3 basketball, and volleyball.

Academics
The top priority of all of our members is to succeed in their undergraduate career. The brothers of Epsilon Alpha collectively have one of the highest fraternity GPAs on campus. Every week the chapter hosts a study night where members are encouraged to come out and spend a few hours quietly studying for their classes. The benefits of being in Fiji span further than just improving your GPA. Brothers study everything from Biology and Mining Engineering, to Law and Political Science. This allows members to explore areas other than their concentration, and perhaps find new interests, or a new career path.

Leadership
Phi Gamma Delta is committed not only to making a brother’s undergraduate career productive and enjoyable. We also look to build the character and skills needed for future leaders. Epsilon Alpha Fijis are already an important part of the University of Alberta community. We currently have members sitting on Students Council, and members on General Faculties Council. Plus, we have members involved with various Faculty Associations, Orientation, and other key Student Groups. In fact, Fiji was just recognized for its campus contributions by winning the Campus Involvement award from amongst all fraternal organizations at the UofA.

Values

Fraternities thrive when a group of individuals come together for a collective set of goals. Phi Gamma Delta gets its strength from the characteristics that it nurtures and values.

Friendship

You don’t necessarily get along with all of your siblings, and, if we didn’t hold friendship to be a core value, you might not get along with all of your brothers. Each of us has things to learn and things to teach, and by working together and exchanging such knowledge as we have and acquire along the way, you will develop strong friendships while you’re not even paying attention. It will happen when you’re helping a brother with some schoolwork, while you’re on a road trip, when you’re planning a party, or after a graduate brother gives you some good advice about future planning. Your friends, especially during your university career, will help you understand all the possibilities that are open to you.

Excellence

Whatever you do, do it to the best of your abilities. We don’t ask that you be perfect at everything, only that you come out and put your whole heart into it. Pick up a new sport, run for student government, plan to get into medical school, or head a new philanthropy initiative - no matter what you choose, you can be sure that your brothers will support you. Your own drive for excellence, combined with support you never asked for, will propel you to heights you never imagined.

Morality

Simply put, we believe in doing the right thing. What is the ‘right’ thing, you ask? It is whatever you decide to do, after considering the effects of your actions on your own situation and that of those around you. A brother in Phi Gamma Delta strives to be a gentleman at all times, not because it is required of him, but rather because he believes that a life filled with compassion and virtue will benefit him and the world.

Service

Being at university is a privilege. When you graduate from your undergraduate degree, you will be among the top 2% of educated people on the planet. With all the knowledge and potential available to you from that high vantage point, it is important to remember the hundreds of millions of people who will never have that opportunity. They are denied the same privileges we take for granted merely because of the circumstances they were born into. Some of those people reside in faraway countries, and others live on the streets around you. By constantly engaging in philanthropy, we remember our duty to give back to those less fortunate than us. As an added bonus, doing philanthropy as a group is a lot of fun. You will get exposed to people and viewpoints your university career would otherwise isolate you from. Finally, when you graduate and get out into the workplace, you will be able to offer a well-rounded perspective to your employer, and hold a greater understanding of the impact of your work, whatever it may be, on the world at large.

Knowledge

First and foremost, you are at university to earn a degree. Every undergraduate brother holds this as a basic truth. Your brothers will help you by studying with you, lending you textbooks, giving you advice on courses to take, and simply encouraging you not to give up when it seems like you can’t study for another minute. Beyond scholarship, knowledge is gained from experience, and being a Fiji will give you plenty of that. On the surface, it looks like you are learning to live with your brothers, plan parties, do charity work, get good grades, and figure out what on earth to do when you graduate. In reality, you will be learning teamwork, leadership, project management, time management, networking skills, and a thousand other small things that will serve you as well in a boardroom as they do in your chapter house. Finally, the greatest knowledge comes from understanding how you can make a difference to your community, yourself, and the earth you live on. We can’t give that knowledge to you, but we can promise you that the wealth of experiences you gain from Phi Gamma Delta will aid you in your quest for that understanding.
